It was free as it was open house day. (I am cheap.)

There are lots of interesting exhibits, from how stamps are made to how the post office works. There is exhibit on Singapore WWII history, a section on Dog stamps. The sea creatures room was fun. You can relax, play with some cards and for the kids, do some coloring and drawing, and stamp sea creatures onto paper as souvenirs. At the entrance/exit, you can fill in a simple quiz to win some prizes. We got a bookmark.

We also pretended to be stamps :)

An interesting way to spend an hour or so.

You can park at ROM or the neighbouring carpark at coleman rise (behind the old National Library)

Open house days are :
New Year's Day, 2nd Day of Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, International Museum Day, National Day, Deepavali and Christmas.

Singapore Philatelic Museum
23 B Coleman Street
Singapore 179807
Republic of Singapore

We also hoped over the Singapore Art Museum as it was also free. It is big and do not have much activity for kids, but at least it inspired my son to paste his paintings all over our walls. I found that the paintings could sustain his interest so at least he wasn’t bored. It is not the Lourve but an interesting activity for a morning. Parking can be found at Waterloo Street. Currently they are having an interesting theme of Fiction@Love, exploring love through anime, comics and manga. This should appeal to the kids and teenagers.

Singapore Art Museum
71 Bras Basah Road, Singapore 189555
Republic of Singapore

Free Admission on Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa, International Museum Day, National Day, Deepavali and Christmas, On Fridays, 6.00pm - 9.00pm

Free Museums

In the spirit of International Museum Day 18 – 28 May 06 (actually should be days right), I will be introducing a few unique museums you can visit in Singapore. Pour it out for a fresh, refreshing drink that kids will love.

Try out different fruits like kiwis, bananas for different tastes.

places to go

Upcoming events for kids

Dinosaurs in Singapore !

There will be a new dinosaur exhibit at the science center beginning 20 may to 20 aug 2006. Well, I hope that this blog will be able to suggest some activities for kids and young at heart to dispel that notion.

For the first installment, Farm Visits, part 1 :

Hay Diaries :
Located at 3 Lim Chu Kang Lane 4, this is a goat farm where you can see how they are milked and have a chance to visit the baby goats (kids) and also purchase fresh goats milk. The milk comes in a small 250ml bottle or a 1l bottle, and in 2 flavours, normal and chocolate. I like the chocolate as they did not add any sugar and it softens the taste of the milk.

You can also purchase some hay to feed the goats, but with the crowds of visitors, the goats don’t seem to be too hungry.

Milking time is from 9am to 11am, but they are open until 4pm.

Crowds can get a bit large during holidays and weekends.

Jurong Frog Farm :

Nearby, at 56 Lim Chu Kang Lane 6 is Jurong Frog Farm, where you can see the various steps in the life cycle of a frog, from tadpoles to fully grown frogs. As well as “enjoying” the symphony of the croaking of the bullfrogs, you can also see eels and some freshwater fish. You can purhase frogs for your porridge or soups ( they will kill and de-skin the frogs), or herbal products to cook with the frogs. They also sell snakehead fish and eels. It is very interesting how they kill the frogs if you have the stomach for it. Also, don’t miss the Snow frog jelly (hashima) which you can purchase cheaply

Quail's Farm, Lian Wah Hing - 5 Lim Chu Kang Rd at Lane 6F.

William, the owner/spokesperson of the farm has moved to Farmart and thus the farm is closed to the public.
I will feature farmart another day

Aerogreen Technologies - 115 Neo Tiew Crescent
Aerogreen produces pesticide free vegetables using aeroponics. Aeroponics is the science of using air to grow vegetables, and basically these vegetables are not grown in soil, but instead their roots are sprayed with water containing nutrients. These vegetables are available at your local supermarket under the brand aerogreen. They produce vegetables such as butter head lettuce, cherry tomatoes, Kai Lan, Bai Cai, etc. While you can visit and walkaround the farm yourself (limited to certain areas only), there is a farm tour available at $3.50 per head (you get a free drink or lettuce with that).

You can of course purchase aerogreen products here, and you can harvest your own butterhead lettuce from a mini aeroponics station, where you can see how the plants are grown.

Kin Yan Agrotech - No. 220 Neo Tiew Crescent, Singapore

This farm grows organic wheatgrass which is supposed to be good for blood circulation, high blood pressure, etc. You can see how they grow the wheatgrass as well as how they make jellys, drinks ,etc from the wheatgrass. Move over to the main building, can you can try and buy various wheatgrass products such as jellys, cereals, powers, drinks, and ice cream even. You can also purchase other stuff like aloe vera and other health products.

Fire Flies Health Farm - Plot 75 Lim Chu Kang Lane 2,

Looking for organic vegetables? This farm has it all, from spinach, cabbage, broccoli, carrots, to long beans and ladies’ fingers. They grow their vegetables organically with no animal products or pesticides. They use compose as fertilizers which consist of rock dust, seaweed, molasses, sawdust and beans.
Here you can buy the vegetables and also other organic products in their store. It may be more expensive then regular vegetables but they are comparable to the prices of organic food that you can find in the supermarkets.
